ABOUT: Our Lessons on the River workshops are all-ages, hands-on opportunities to learn about the issues impacting our waterways and gain skills to engage our mission to protect clean water!

On June 24th, we’ll learn about native plants commonly found along streambanks, aka riparian zones, and their importance for protecting water quality, wildlife habitat, and more! We’ll gather at Thrive Garden Center and then head to Foggy Bottom for an optional 3-hour guided float trip to see native plant ecosystems in action (find info about discounted rental rate below). Participants should wear clothes and shoes they don’t mind getting wet and are encouraged to bring water in a refillable bottle. This is a great opportunity to learn about the importance of native plants in river ecosystems and gain new skills to empower community-based, responsible stewardship of the Harpeth River Watershed.

DETAILS:

9:45 am: Arrive at Thrive Garden Center. When you arrive, step into the Yorkshire Deli on site for coffee or breakfast goodies to enjoy during the presentation or ask them to prepare a boxed lunch for your trip down the river.

10:00-11:00 am: Gather outside the garden center for an hour-long outdoor presentation from Matt Pilcher, local native plant specialist and float guide.

11:00-2:30 pm: Relocate to Foggy Bottom for an optional 3-hour guided float trip down the Harpeth. On the float, our guide will point out and talk about many different plant species that support the river’s ecosystem. Participants will need to either bring their own boat or rent a boat for a reduced rate of $35, which includes a shuttle to the Kingston Springs City Park (KSCP) put-in (regular rate $41 + tax). Only 8 single kayaks available at this discounted rate. Anyone with their own boat can meet us at KSCP. If you bring your own boat, you will need make your own shuttle arrangements from the take-out at Hwy 70 back to KSCP. All ages are welcome, but children must be accompanied by an adult and wear a PFD at all times. Dogs are welcome.
