MAYOR OF FRANKLIN RECEIVES RIVER STEWARD AWARD
FROM HARPETH RIVER WATERSHED ASSOCIATION
Mayor Tom Miller of Franklin was honored by the Harpeth River Watershed Association at their May 26 Annual Meeting held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with the River Steward Award in the Elected Official Category. Mayor Miller was recognized for his leadership in the City’s commitment to the preservation of historic open spaces that also are important to securing the long-term health of the Harpeth River. The Harpeth River Watershed Association also recognized other individuals and groups for their dedication and hard work related to the conservation and preservation of the Harpeth River and its watershed. These categories for the 2005 River Steward Awards included: Community Group, Individual, Developer, Restoration, Local Government Official, and Volunteer Extraordinaire.
Volunteer Extraordinaire: Hugh DuPree for his efforts over the last 10 years cleaning up the trash in the Harpeth in downtown Franklin.
Individual: Jennifer Stewart-Wright for her participation in numerous river restoration projects last year and as the HRWA representative at community outreach and education events.
Community Group: Franklin First United Methodist Church for the loads of trash hauled out of the Harpeth on their Great Day of Service in early May 2005, for planting trees along the river for bank stabilization, and for also identifying and notifying the City of Franklin about harmful discharge into the river.
Restoration Award: Eagle Scout Kenny Snyder and his fellow Boy Scouts for outstanding river restoration work accomplished in Brentwood in the Little Harpeth River and in the Duck River watershed.
Developer: Trillium Ventures — Mark Dietze and Paul Arnold — for commitment to incorporating the latest in development design of Highlands at Ladd and going well beyond current local and state requirements in order to protect stream health and water quality of the Harpeth River.
Elected Official: Tom Miller, Mayor of Franklin for his leadership in the City’s commitment to the preservation of historic open spaces that also are important to securing the long-term health of the Harpeth River.
Local Government Official: Dave Bunt, Director of City Parks in Brentwood, for his continued support of restoration work and addressing erosion along the Little Harpeth River from Crockett Park through River Park to Tower Park.
